Looking back, moving forward
As in previous years (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) here is my annual recap of how my year unfolded.
In January, I took some time off, did some research and got my studio in order.
In February, I hibernated and worked on a custom mural (more to come on that).
In March, I was a guest on the Canadian Typography Archives new series, Type Nights in Canada (video here). I also lead a private workshop for the design students at Toronto Metropolitan University.
In April, I started a huge window painting project for Aesop - approx. 80 hours of painting in 2 Toronto locations (Queen Street West, Eaton Centre), and 5 NYC locations (NOMAD, Upper West Side, Madison Avenue, Park Slope, Williamsburg). Also, solar eclipse = amazing!
In May, I wrapped up the Aesop project in NYC. I also restocked Ontario Fruit shirts and launched the new Daddy shirts. I also created a special new tote bag for Annick Press' relaunch of Robert Munsch’s 1980 classic, The Paper Bag Princess. And I was a portfolio reviewer for Adobe's Creative Retreat in Toronto.
In June, I created a custom chalkboard for a real estate staging. I completed some custom sign painting elements for Chatelaine magazine. And then I headed west and taught sign painting workshops in Calgary and Saskatoon, in partnership with DesCan. I also painted a sign for the new Blackbird Baking Co. at St. Lawrence Market.
In July, I worked on a custom tote bag for Pupo's Supermarket in Welland, ON. And I turned 42!
In August, I started painting some murals for a paediatric dentistry office in Toronto.
In September, I made my way to Vancouver. I presented my talk, Sign Painting and the Rise of the Analog, at Type Brigade, as part of DesignVancouver Festival (video here). I taught a public sign painting workshop at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, in partnership with DesCan. And then I offered a special 3-hour sign painting intensive for the fourth year Communication Design students at Emily Carr. I also launched a collaborative mural project with Light+Paper at St. Mike's hospital.
In October, I created a new painting for the Buddies in Bad Times Art Attack auction.
In November, I launched my new holiday card designs (here and here).
In December, I participated in City of Craft, Toronto's largest not-for-profit, juried craft show. And to close the year, I completed a new anaglyph self-portrait.
2024 was a rollercoaster, but I am grateful to continue doing the work that I love. I look forward to what 2025 will bring.
Thanks again!
